These two collages are part of a series of studies for quilts I’ve been making. There is a long history of African Americans collaging and bringing disparate pieces together to make new stories and images, from the Quilts of Gee’s Bend to Wu-Tang themselves. These two images are thinking about two African American acts from PT Barnum’s circus days, one he called ‘Savage Congress,’ in which he gathered all his ‘exotic’ acts and had them perform together. I imagine them as a phalanx of shields, an opaque collectivity, topped with spears. The other was a brother who was displayed as a ‘geek,’ which means that he ate snakes on stage. The image is surreal and has almost a mythic quality, like the heroes of the kung fu movies I watched as a kid, kind of a ‘deadly venom.’
Each edition comes stamped with Wu-Tang logo emboss.
