About the artwork

We were shooting models in Malibu, and because a lot of the models on this shoot were very androgynous—her bob haircut is not the most feminine thing in the world—I wanted to add a bit more femininity, which is why we added the flowers. We had a number of portraits showing the model’s faces, so I wondered how I could introduce a photo that’s less about her face, more anonymous, within the context of a fashion story.

The light was very beautiful, and there was a moment when I decided I could create a photo that didn’t necessarily have anything to do with fashion, so we had her take the clothes off just as the sun was setting. The gold tones you see on her back are even more gold than normal because the fires had just happened in Malibu, and the smoke made the sunset even more orange.
