Stanya redefines categories and labels
“I am inspired by people– watching them, listening to them...”
As an interdisciplinary artist that works predominantly in video, Stanya Kahn works in sound design, writing, drawing and performance. Her work tries to re-define the borders between categories: fiction and reality, abstraction and representation, the real and the hyper-real, the uncanny and the mundane. Her sources of inspiration span the gamut, including literature, comedy, revolutionary movements and science. Kahn is also a 2012 Guggenheim Fellow in Film/Video, and her solo and collaborative works have been shown in the Whitney Biennial (2008), California Biennial (2010), MoMA, MOCA, Getty Museum, PS1 and the Hammer Museum. Tight-lipped about explaining her humorous submission for Absolut Art, Stanya hopes that her work is self-explanatory. After all, what good is a joke if you have to explain it?
