About the artwork
In 2005, I was commissioned by the Dutch intelligence agency (AIVD) to create a work that would “reveal the human face” of the organization. During the next three years I met with 18 agents who volunteered to be interviewed, but remained anonymous even to me. The project resulted in a variety of forms. Make Me Anonymous addresses my desire to make the transformation from artist into agent. Drawing on the subtle and indirect language employed within AIVD, I combine terms and phrases picked up from the agents I interviewed. The resulting list of instructions, titled The Directives, hovers somewhere between a love letter and a request for training from The Organization. In 2013, I drew on this vocabulary to produce the neon work Make Me Anonymous.
