Pink Bird In Flight

About the artwork
For me, this was an interesting painting to make, because instead of just jumping into it, it was a stepping stone in a way. I sometimes make small drawings and paintings that I blow up into other works. The original painting for this print went to Sabine Knust gallery, in Munich.
In repeating the image, I’m thinking about how to distill the shapes. It creates a kind of stillness in the image, which is contradictory because it’s a painting of a bird in flight. It’s the opposite of Giacomo Balla’s Futurist painting Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash, with the poodle’s legs moving. And then the title refers to the Constantin Brancusi sculpture Bird in Space, which is also about motion but is a static object. Both the tonally gray colors and the composition, which functions on an X, add to the sense of stillness.
