About the artwork

No. 2 /No. 60,000 (Yellow, Orange, Red) is created through the use of an artificially intelligent neural network that’s been trained to make work like the painter Mark Rothko, and it was the predecessor to later works such as New Now, which is a series of digital paintings that was developed using machine learning to train a neural network on all of the artist’s previous works, so it’s both a way to optimize the artistic practice and to dictate what pieces the artist will make next. The artificial intelligence created by the artist becomes the artist. This project speaks to the data-driven optimization of targeted marketing and the ways in which artificial intelligence seeks to understand and manipulate our deepest impulses.
