About the artwork

This was shot during an advertising campaign for Marysia Swimwear, at a beach near JFK airport. We arrived about 6 a.m., and the beach looked nothing like it did when I had scouted it a couple of days prior. It was completely foggy, which gave the beach a quiet sense of mystery. I was trying to find the spot to take our first shot when a flock of birds flew by. Luckily, I had my camera in hand. It was a fleeting moment; they dispersed after I took the shot.

Originally I printed the photo in black and white, and to be honest, it’s only recently, when working with the original file, that I noticed the beautiful color. I still feel this photo conveys that calm, foggy morning, and as with most of my work, there is a sense of geometry, in this case created by the birds repeating a pattern. Or, shall I say, they seem to be repeating, but in fact each one is unique. Each one holds its place confidently, like a puzzle piece. Remove one and the shape doesn’t work as well as before.
