About the artwork

This comes from a fashion shoot for Flair Germany, shot at the Standard Hotel, in New York’s Meatpacking District. Funny enough, to get the shot, we had to pay off one of the last remaining meat distributors in the area so I could gain access to their roof. I took the shot from there, with my assistant on the phone next to me, relaying my instructions to the model, who had her phone on speaker.

I was thinking about two things. I love the graphic nature of the building’s lines and how they make a grid when you crop out the building’s borders. The other thing I was thinking about had to do with privacy. You can see the hotel’s windows from the West Side Highway, and I had heard that traffic accidents had increased sharply when the hotel had first gone up, since apparently hotel guests were exposing themselves.

We had paid a maid to stay and change the bed in the room below, but the man changing with his back to the viewer was a happy accident.

I like this photo because of the dance that your eye does when viewing it, from the model to the maid to the man changing. Your mind wants to form a narrative, and you have questions about what is happening. I also think most of us have vouyeristic tendencies. If we can look through fifteen windows at once without being seen, most of us will go for it!
