About the artwork

I took this photo while shooting an editorial for L’Officiel Mexico. We were shooting on a mountaintop in Malibu. It was a beautiful property with an incredible piece of architecture that we were featuring in the editorial, but it also had a stunning view of Malibu and of the ocean. I was waiting for the model to change and looking down at Malibu when I saw the winding road. There had been huge fires in the area a few days before, so there was still a lot of smoke hanging in the air, making everything look so atmospheric and full of depth. The road’s shape is what initially caught my eye, its rounded corners going against the grain of the mountain’s sharp diagonals. I love how they work together. I also love how the smoke washed out the color and gives the muted blue tones, and how, at the top of the photo, you can see the road finally meeting the ocean, most of the other detail being almost completely hazed over by smoke.
