About the artwork

To understand racial inequality in my home city of New York, I spent months drawing these 100 characters, who represent New York City in a way that reflects its population as recorded by census data. I hope that these numbers make us pause and think about representation in the lead up to this election where voter suppression is already a huge concern.

If New York City were 100 people, 14 would be age 65 and over. Eleven would have a disability. Sixty-eight would be people of color. Thirty-seven would be immigrants. Nineteen would live in poverty. Ten would have an annual income of over $105,000.

These numbers are also relevant when thinking about health. When you consider who is most affected by Covid-19, you need to consider inequalities in housing, in access to healthcare, in wealth. And so much of that ends up consistently affecting people of color. These inequalities existed before Covid-19 arrived in New York. And the pandemic has not eliminated those differences; rather, it has shown the way that they are tied together.
