About the artwork

Desert Solitaire explores the myths of the American West through a desert choked with natural and man-made iconography. Created through a process involving a photo transfer technique that intentionally invites “mistakes” such as doublings of imagery, in combination with expressive gestures in oil paint, the image is both immediate and harmonic. Automated processes intersect with the human hand, mirroring my landscapes in which the man-made intersects with the natural. The resulting works are a cinematic turn on the tradition of large-scale history painting in which a chaos of imagery is controlled to an unnerving stillness.
