About the artwork

In La ventana, a wildlife composition of ripe fruits and sneering snakes confronts the immediacy of color and the shapeshifting nature of its vibrations as the scenery jars out from its own stillness.

The Venezuelan-born artist often turns to painting to investigate popular art forms typically excluded from western art history. She looks at the perception of Latin American cultures, and her work confronts the spectator with the exoticizing treatment of the imagery and narratives of the cultural “other.” She questions clichéd iconography with a singular and consistent presentation of abstracted tropicalism.

Sol Calero will be donating her portion of the profits from the sale of “La ventana” to a small organization called Help Venezuelan Children, who makes food for children, single mothers, and sick elderly people from Carora, Venezuela. Absolut Art has donated an additional $1,500 to Help Venezuelan Children.
