About the artwork

Truro is the name of a summer vacation town on Cape Cod, in Massachusetts. So the title is a reference to another seaside amusement town, Old Orchard Beach in Maine, where I was living on a residency funded by The Jaunt, in Copenhagen, when I created the original work that I’ve turned into a print here. Plus, it’s just a neat word.

The original is composed of painted and sewn pieces of canvas. Like my other two prints, the coloration and forms are based on elements from Palace Playland, the amusement park in Old Orchard Beach. I liked how the method of sewing became another layer of reference, because it began to recall the upholstery of the seats on the rides. Then there are vinyl tablecloths in the concession area that are sewn together with fabric from tents and awnings and banners and so on.

While the compositions in the other two works are more like landscapes, in this one the whole painting is comprised of vertical strips of canvas. One thing I was thinking about here is a slot machine, where you have to wait to see the whole composition. And maybe the hearts are there because you’re winning a prize for your sweetheart.
