About Thomas Helbig

Thomas paints a world of melancholy and grace

“There is an element of vanitas in most of my work, as if art’s mortality is mourned or celebrated... but maybe that’s pathetic and pretentious.”

The search for eternal beauty is a difficult task. But that is what Berlin-based artist Thomas Helbig seeks to do through mediums such as paint and sculpture. His work often possesses vanitas features common to 16th and 17th century still life paintings in Flanders and the Netherlands, depicting velvet, jewellery, and the absence of human beings. Helbig’s “For the Vatican Collections” is a two piece submission for Absolut Art. The photographs depict an Italian 1920s actor named Del Abusi, who is featured in a movie about the Vatican.
