Russell Tovey Curation Celebrating LGBTQ+ Artists
In celebration of Pride Month, Absolut Art is thrilled to collaborate with actor, art collector, and co-host of the podcast Talk Art Russell Tovey on a collection of signed editioned prints from some of today’s most exciting emerging and established LGBTQ+ artists.
Tovey has curated a multigenerational group of LGBTQ+ artists living in Paris, London, and the greater New York area: Pol Anglada, Katherine Bradford, Kyle Coniglio, Sola Olulode, and Joy Yamusangie. Among them, the artists have shown their work at museums from New York’s MoMA PS1 to the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; they have earned fellowships from organizations like the Guggenheim Foundation and the American Academy in Rome; and they have collaborated with renowned fashion designers such as JW Anderson.
Whether showing figures in pairs, in groups, or solitary, all the works focus on the human figure in all its expressive possibilities. Anglada’s shows two men embracing in a kiss, while Bradford’s shows two androgynous figures holding hands. Coniglio’s quiet work depicts a man immobilized by a broken leg, while Olulode’s shows dancing figures in London’s QTIBPOC nightlife scene. Yamusangie’s print, meanwhile, illustrates the butterflies of a first date and the magic of a first kiss.
“It’s a suite of queer artists, so it’s about pride and representation, but it’s also about the universality of what it means to be alive,” says Russell Tovey in an interview with artist Katherine Bradford for the Absolut Art Journal.
With gallerist Robert Diament, Tovey hosts the popular podcast Talk Art, and the two have authored the brand-new book “Talk Art: Everything You Wanted to Know about Contemporary Art but Were Afraid to Ask.” Publisher’s Weekly calls it “heartfelt and informative” and “the perfect springboard for those curious about the wide and varied world of art.”
In honor of the curation, Absolut Art will donate 20% of the proceeds to akt, a charity supporting LGBTQ+ youth facing or experiencing homelessness in the UK, continuing The Absolut Company’s 40-year history of supporting the LGBTQ+ community.
