Martin’s work is an exploration of her own identity as a queer woman artist of color

Absolut Art is thrilled to partner with artist Shantell Martin, whose signature black-and-white drawings, often before a live audience, explore identity, intersectionality and play. The partnership centers on a collection of limited-edition prints available exclusively through Absolut Art, and will play out on a global scale.

This ambitious collaboration includes events and exhibitions over three continents, taking place during Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in February, New York Pride Month in June, and Stockholm Pride, at the end of July. If you’re in Sydney for Mardi Gras, you can check out a pop-up exhibition at MCM House, a live light performance at Icebergs Dining Room and Bar in Bondi Beach, and a conversation between Martin and Australian artist and Sydney Biennale curator Brook Andrew.

Martin’s work is an exploration of her own identity as a queer woman artist of color, and has often affirmed the viewer’s identity, with written messages like “You are you.” She brings together fine art, performance art, and technology in a truly unique fusion, and has adorned walls, sneakers, cars and even circuit boards with her whimsical visions.

Martin has exhibited her work at venues like the Brooklyn Museum and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, in Buffalo, New York; she has partnered with institutions such as the New York City Ballet and artists like the Grammy- and Pulitzer-winning rapper Kendrick Lamar and Lizzo.

Building on our parent company Absolut’s long standing support of LGBTQ+ communities (they’ve donated over $40 million to LGBTQ+ charities over forty years), we’re proud to continue their tradition of equality and inclusion.
